Savtri Girls’ College

The National Service Scheme unit of Savitri Girls’ College has, for well over a decade, remained steadfastly committed to the exalted ideals of humanitarian service, civic responsibility and participatory nation-building enshrined in the NSS motto, “Not Me But You.” Conceived not merely as an auxiliary co-curricular platform but as a transformative pedagogic enterprise, the unit seeks to inculcate among its volunteers a profound sense of social consciousness, ethical accountability and compassionate citizenship. Simultaneously, it provides young students with invaluable opportunities for personality development, leadership cultivation and self-articulation. Many volunteers who initially entered the programme with considerable diffidence and hesitation have, through sustained engagement in NSS activities, evolved into confident speakers, organisers and empathetic community leaders, thereby discovering latent talents and capabilities that might otherwise have remained unexplored.
Over the years, the unit has successfully orchestrated an extensive spectrum of socially responsive initiatives and extension activities. Special camps organised in the adopted slum area of Singhi Bagan have addressed themes of pressing contemporary relevance, including “Healthy Youth for Healthy India”, “Youth for Environment Enrichment and Conservation”, “Youth for Women’s Empowerment through Education”, “Youth for National Integration and Social Harmony”, “Youth for the Protection of Child Rights”, “Youth for Elderly Care” and “Youth for Sustainable Development”. In addition, the unit has organised blood donation and eye-screening camps, anti-honking campaigns, AIDS and Thalassemia awareness programmes, cleanliness drives and “Run for the Nation” initiatives. Educational excursions to Belur Math and Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur, along with the observance of significant national and international commemorative days, have further enriched the intellectual, ethical and cultural sensibilities of the volunteers.
The unit has also brought considerable distinction to the institution through active participation in prestigious national events and intercultural exchange programmes. NSS volunteers have represented the college at the Republic Day Parade in the national capital as well as at the ceremonial parade on Red Road, Kolkata, while others have participated in National Integration Camps held at Jaipur, Manali and Kerala, thereby fostering the ideals of secularism, cultural pluralism and national solidarity. Beyond organised institutional activities, volunteers are encouraged to undertake independent acts of community service, including literacy initiatives for underprivileged children and environmental advocacy through organisations such as Greenpeace. In accordance with the guidelines of the University of Calcutta NSS Cell, volunteers are required to complete 240 hours of regular activities and participate compulsorily in at least one special camp over a span of two years in order to qualify for the NSS certificate.
The exemplary endeavours of the unit have received notable recognition through the conferment of the Best College, Best Unit, Best Programme Officer and Best Student Volunteer Awards by the University of Calcutta in 2012–13, while volunteer Padma Singh was honoured with the West Bengal State NSS Award in 2013–14. In recent years, however, the momentum of the unit has inevitably been moderated by the lingering repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, inadequate financial allocation, declining student enrolment and the absence of sustained institutional and infrastructural facilitation necessary for the regular execution and expansion of its programmes. Nevertheless, the unit continues to nurture an unwavering aspiration to recover its former dynamism and to renew its longstanding tradition of meaningful social engagement through the restoration of a more enabling and supportive academic environment.
